The million dollar question often pondered by muscian’s late at night, “Is it easier to write better material with a broken heart?” All to often the answer is “Yes”.  The unsettled feelings of life seem to enjoy exploding through sound.  The medium may have strings, brass, keys, cymbals or a mouth resonating an emotion, either way, music seems better expressed with raw vulnerability.

I have been waiting for a moody Norah Jones for years, ten to be exact.  Finally, I think Norah found her sound  between a DangerMouse and a Heart broken place.  The squirmy new single “Happy Pills” drives home a Black Keys-esque guitar riff riding on a moonlite backbeat.  “Happy Pills” threads a beautiful break-up and the yearning to move on from past love as Norah chants, “Gotta get ya, gotta get ya out of my head”.  She leaves me with sympathy and the need to shake my hips at the same time.  Are we celebrating Ms. Jones?  If so, I will save my new favorite moody mudhoney debutant a drink any night of the week.
